In the US, abortion is a contested subject. Many believe that abortion should be legal, many believe it should be banned. The US and the UK are very similar countries, with similar politics and governments. So let’s see where the two countries are on abortion
Starting off with the US, the most abortion-restrictive state is Texas, because you can only get an abortion 6 weeks into a pregnancy, while the most lenient states are Alaska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, and Vermont, with no abortion restrictions. The average of the time limit between all the states to get an abortion is about 22 weeks.
Onto the second country, the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is much more consistent in it’s policies regarding abortion, and it’s policies are more relaxed than 17 out of 50 U.S. states. The policy being that abortions are ok if pregnancy would harm a mother’s mental or physical health more than an abortion and it’s before 25 weeks.
Abortion is moreso threatened in the US with the conservative majority Supreme Court likely being unwilling to challenge violations to roe v. Wade (/sidenote: roe v wade was the landmark trial that ended up legalizing abortion in the US). Despite the conservatives having more power in the UK than the US, the government over there has been more busy with things like gas shortages, brexit, and the virus than the local conservative governments in the states.
In conclusion, abortion is debated hotly today and probably wont stop for a long time. Hopefully, the Supreme Court will tell Texas to stop messing with it’s laws, and keep other states from messing with their laws, and the UK’s government wont restrict abortion, at least in these troubling times.
