Literally 1984
In this final unit of Forbidden Books, we did not go outside of the school for activities (sad). So, for my last action project of Forbidden Books, I had to pick a book that had been banned or challenged in the US and try to find out why it was banned or challenged and if it should be restricted, or not. For this assignment, I decided to read nineteen eighty four by Eric Blair (more commonly known by his pen name, George Orwell). The book was challenged in 1981 in Jackson county, Florida for allegedly spreading communism. Curiously, there was a lack of diversity racial or otherwise in the book, other than a brief mention of ‘homosexuals’ when describing the inhabitants of a prison. The following is an essay on the book nineteen eighty four, and my position on it’s censorship:
