The brimley diabetes prevention plan
For this final unit of cure in the freshman year, the last action project was to create a prevention plan for a fictional patient. We were able to choose what we wanted to prevent, so I chose diabetes. The patient, Arnold P. Doolittle, has a family history of diabetes and wants to prevent getting it. Arnold P. Doolittle is 54 years old, 5’9, has never smoked, and weights 170 pounds. This, along with his diet having lots of refined starch (things like white bread), putting him at above average risk for diabetes. What can we do to help? Easiest first, don't start smoking. Secondly, begin switching some of the refined starch in your diet to whole grain wheat, and add in some unsaturated fats like in olive oil. Finally, start getting down to a healthier weight by losing around 25 pounds every two years. In terms of medications, some diabetes-preventing drugs include voglibose, and glipizide.
